Local DateTime Utility Function

by Ryan Brooks 5. April 2011 04:42PM

Just wanted to share a quick utility function. We have a server in another timezone and this frequently presents issues in our client apps when displaying time stamps. There isn't really a solid solution to handle this in the database so I put together this little utility function that can be called rather than DateTime.Now to get the current local time.

        /// <summary>
        /// Returns the current Eastern Standard DateTime
        /// </summary>
        public static DateTime CurrentDateTime()
        {
            return TimeZoneInfo.ConvertTime(TimeZoneInfo.ConvertTimeToUtc(DateTime.Now,
                                                                                                            TimeZoneInfo.Local),
                                            TimeZoneInfo.Utc,
                                            TimeZoneInfo.FindSystemTimeZoneById("Eastern Standard Time"));
        }

I have this in a utility class called AppLogic so all I need to do is call AppLogic.CurrentDateTime() to get the local EST time. Obviously, you would change your time zone where applicable.

Enjoy!

Permanently Apply Photoshop Layer Effects

by Ryan Brooks 20. February 2011 02:35AM

When working in Photoshop, have you ever had the need to apply some styles to an object and merge them onto the actual object? If you apply layer styles, and then update part of the object, the style will update accordingly as well. This seems like a hard concept to explain (and I don't think I did it that well), so let's see an example.

Say you have a simple box like this and have applied some layer effects.

Photoshop Style Image 1

Say you need to edit the image and remove the corner of the box. As the layer styles are applied to box dynamically, updating the boundaries of the box will not have any impact on the layer effects - they will be reapplied to the new boundary like so:

Photoshop Style Image 2

You can see that the border and drop shadow now go around the curved section that we cut out. Sometimes this isn't what we want; we may want to alter the object, but have the layer effects stay exactly like they are - just as if we had manually styled the object. This is where the tip comes in... if you merge two layers together, the layer effects will also be merged into one. So, add a new layer and put anything on there - a small circle, some text, whatever. Then we're going to merge this new layer with the layer of our styled box.

Photoshop Style Image 3

So you can see the new temporary layer with the circle we added. Also note that the layer effects on the Shape 1 layer are applied as we would expect. After we merge the two layers, we see that the layer effects are still applied, but are no longer dynamic - they're permanently attached to the actual layer.

Photoshop Style Image 4

Now all we need to do is erase the circle we added and we're back to a layer with only our blue box. The style is permanently applied so if we alter the box it will not change the styling.

Photoshop Style Image 5

Here you can see that we cutout the bottom right corner, but the layer effect didn't change at all - notice the lack of border and drop shadow around the curve.

So, this isn't something you need to do often but sometimes it's really handy to be able to alter an object AND the layer styling together. There certainly may be another way to accomplish this as I certainly don't claim to be a Photoshop Guru but I stumbled across this and thought it was pretty handy and very easy to do.

What is a good mix of traffic for a website?

by Jim Barbour 6. February 2011 05:30AM

All businesses that have marketing websites are looking to improve traffic. Sure it is a numbers game - more traffic, more potential customers, a certain percentage will buy something, etc. But the underlying factor is that the quality of the traffic matters more than the count of the traffic.

Does it really pay to have 1,000 visitors come to your website if they are not interested in your content? It does make more sense to attract 50 or 100 are interested, will read your content, sign up for your newsletter and perhaps buy something on your website.

Organic traffic is the best but is the hardest to achieve. This comes to those lucky enough to be a the top of the search engines for the search terms that are meaningful to their business. When a visitor is actually searching for your content and finds your site - they ARE interested and will be eager to see what you have to offer.

Referral links are also very good especially if they originate on another high quality [high Page rank] website and link back to your website. These links are enhanced and become the most meaningful to your website when they contain the keywords that you have built into your website. This is the type of link that The Limo Project 50 Cities offers to advertising limousine websites in the 50 most populated US Cities. A poor example of this type of link back text is "Great Limo Company", a much better example of a proper link back text is "Great Orlando Limo Service" such as Great Orlando Limo Service This link contains the most popular search terms for finding a Limousine company in the Orlando, Fl area.

Email Marketing Referral Links are very good, but take a considerable amount of work to get in front of the potential client. To do this properly, you need a service to send the email and measure the results. You can choose from a free service such as Mail Chimp, or a business solution such as Constant Contact. Next you need to design an email template and the content of the email to send out. Here is a sample of the email we sent out to request Limo Companies to donate 2 hours of Limousine Service for a Valentine's Day Contest we are marketing:
.

Once you have the service and the email in place, you need a list of valid emails. You can achieve this through a sign-up on your website, purchasing a list or mining emails on the Internet. It is best to have people opt into your list [they gave you permission to send them email]. Always include a way for the end user to "unsubscribe" or "opt out" from future emails. You do not want to leave the impression that you are a spammer. If you see this referral in your Analytics report, it is an indication of success! Here is the measured results of the email sent to about 543 Limo companies:

Of the 543 emails sent:

  • 167 [30%] were opened
  • 33 [6%] bounced
  • 21 [3.8%] clicked to the offering
  • 5 [2.9% Of opened, 23.8% of clicked to offering] companies signed up!

Blogging Writing you own content that links back to your website is a great way to get traffic. The general public is hungry for good content. This is "free" when done on your own. It does take time and a personality that enjoys writing. You can also gain traffic by responding to other blog content by commenting.

Twitter / Facebook / Linked In It is a great idea to become engaged in social media marketing through these 3 websites. Twitter is more fun - quick tweets, consisting of 160 letters or less. This is fast moving content that should engage curiosity rather than pure spam. Interested parties will follow you and click through to read full stories.
Facebook is based on linking friends together, but is slowly becoming more commercial with "Fan" pages and advertising opportunities. Linked in is a professional networking environment and very business oriented.

YouTube Video is one of the hottest media contents on the Internet today. A serious company should open a video channel, create content and share this with the world

Shopping Opportunities The Internet is offering many opportunities for businesses to promote their goods and services. Many of these have done the work for you and now need your content. FourSquare, Groupon, Craigslist, and various online malls are waiting for you now.

Paid Advertising

  • Pay Per Click [PPC] / Cost Per Click [CPC]
  • Banner Advertising
  • Sponsorship

There are several ways to pay other sites to send traffic. One of the most effective methods is pay per click advertising on the major search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo. The gist of this advertising allows you to set your own daily budget and bid on keywords or sets of keywords that become clickable links to your website when the end user enters those keywords into the search engine. This is very effective in finding targeted traffic, but can become expensive especially when your competition is bidding up the price of the same keywords you have selected.

A good mix of traffic depends on how you have elected to market your website and the results of the options described above.

Here is a great mix of traffic coming into The Limo Project.
Much of the interest came from Twitter and blogging:

Here is a good mix of traffic for LimoCar Orlando.
Much of this traffic is now organic, 2nd is CPC Google Ads:

Companies should plan to use a mix of all the above in their marketing strategy. Budget and time available will dictate which to use, to do the work internally or to hire any outside services to perform the above tasks. When hiring, ask not only for references, but to see past results.

Limo Project: Experiences Are a Better Investment Than Things

by Jim Barbour 16. January 2011 04:08PM

People often wonder whether a night out on the town in a limousine or similar experiences give more pleasure in the long run than material things such as a designer purse or a new computer. The answer may surprise you.

Psychologists have discovered that disposable income that is spent on experiences is more likely to provide more happiness and satisfaction than money spent on material things. Think back to a birthday party you had as a child. If you are like most people you can probably remember the cake, the friends, the games, and the experience of the whole thing but not always the presents you received. Later on in life most people remember proms, dances, weddings and a special night out on the town. It is true that getting dressed up in nice clothes is often required for these events but the experience and pleasure are what you remember.

Delving a bit deeper into this theory, the social connectedness or the ability to relax and mingle is what makes our experiences valuable. A limousine ride, dinner at a nice restaurant, and theatre tickets are prime examples of this type of experience. Traveling by limousine or hired car and sightseeing as a couple or with a small group would be another example.

There are always exceptions to the rules though. Bad experiences can often produce unpleasant memories that linger longer than the memory of purchasing bad material goods. Taking this bit of information a bit further it would be a wise idea to give a bit more thought and care the planning of your experiences. For example when you are taking a vacation taking a limousine to the airport can set the mood for the whole trip. Of course that does not mean the whole vacation will be a guaranteed pleasure; but taking a limousine will give you a relaxed ride in a spotless and elegant environment with a professional driver.

Times that qualify as experiences are not always solely entertainment; business meetings, lunches, and dinners are in this category. Taking the extra time to find a special restaurant and hiring a limousine can make the difference between a boring, lackluster, business lunch and one that will be remembered with pleasure by both your client and yourself.

There are many other facets of this study regarding experience versus material things, but it is wise to consider experiences an excellent use of income. People often do not even use what they have acquired as far as clothes, household goods, and technology. Many people spend their days acquiring material goods and taking care of them while neglecting their experiences. This often leads to a decreased feeling of satisfaction. Modern society has begun to appreciate minimalism in decor and life; and to appreciate that disposable income is best used to promote richer more pleasurable experiences.

Easily Convert a String to RTF in .NET

by Ryan Brooks 6. January 2011 12:15PM

I came across a situation where I needed to convert a string into RTF format dynamically in an application. After some searching for a .NET RTF library or a conversion function, I decided to just implement my own find/replace method. Needless to say, this proved to be rather tricky. An then, the ah ha moment... I got a tip from a colleague to use the WinForms RichTextBox control and let it do the work. After a little testing, it seems to work pretty well so I figured I'd share this snippet if you ever have the same issue.

Private Shared Function FormatAsRTF(ByVal DirtyText As String) As String
     Dim rtf As New System.Windows.Forms.RichTextBox
     rtf.Text = DirtyText
     Return rtf.Rtf
End Function

On another note... please excuse the code formatting - I'm not at all happy with the default code formatting extension for BlogEngine.NET and need to update that.

You must spend some $ to make some $

by Jim Barbour 24. December 2010 04:58AM

The foundation is set for The Limo Project. I have tallied up the start up expenses to date and we are at $7921.87. So far we have one commitment at $100 / month. It is time to start marketing to the limousine customers to get revenue coming in. Before I do that, I would like to set up the New York and Los Angeles sites. I will do that this weekend.

I spoke with the executive director of National Limousine Association [NLA], Patricia A. Nelson on December 23rd. She was excited about The Limo Project becoming a member and has agreed to do an interview in the upcoming weeks. Out affiliation with NLA will give credibility to the website and allow us to appear in marketing efforts through NLA. The yearly membership is $500. I think it will be well worth it.

Our twitter following is growing nicely - up to 175 with some power players keeping an eye on the project. I invite followers to offer suggestions for marketing. We are happy to listen, learn and share.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

The Limo Project - Domain madness

by Jim Barbour 18. December 2010 02:47PM

This past week started with a strategy session with my SMM team. We looked at the project from the standpoint of our main target audiences and decided that "The Limo Project" brand was not correct for the end user that would rent a limousine or the limo company that would buy advertising. It would be a harder sell if it is named "Limo Project" as that does not portray a long term commitment.

It was also determined that each City-limousine-service.com website would be branded "The Limousine Concierge" and we would create a central website to house all of the "Limo Project" information, ad sales, full disclosure, etc.
New header for end user city websites

I went to Dotster.com first as I have registered many domains there in the past, but their prices have been rising and now they are close to $16/ year. I do have a GoDaddy account, so I checked them out. At $11.99 for a dotcom address, we were getting better. I Googled a coupon and was able to get a 30% discount, so I was happy.

Unfortunately limoProject.com was taken, so I ordered theLimoProject.com I double checked on limoProject and to my surprise, this was in the "delete" stage and expiring in 1 day. I joined GoDaddy's auction for $4.99/year and placed my bid at $12. I was traveling the next day, but smiled when my blackberry red light alerted me to the message - I was the proud owner of www.limoProject.com

I purchased the following domains for the project to secure the top 50 US Cities population wise. I feel that Orlando was ahead of the curve, because I was able to get very good key word rich domains:

  • Orlando-limousine-service.com
  • New-York-City-limousine-service.com
  • a1-Los-Angeles-limo-service.com
  • Chicago-limo-serviceonline.com
  • Houston-limo-service.com
  • Phoenix-limo-service.com
  • Philadelphia-limo-service.com
  • San-Antonio-limo-service.com
  • San-Diego-limo-service-rental.com
  • Dallas-limo-service.com
  • San-Jose-limo-service-rental.com
  • Detroit-limo-service-rental.com
  • San-Francisco-limo-service.com
  • Jacksonville-limo-service.com
  • Indianapolis-limo-service.com

  • Colorado-Springs-limo-service.com
  • Tulsa-limo-service.com
  • Minneapolis-limo-service.com
  • Arlington-limo-service.com
  • Honolulu-limo-service.com

I was contacted by several domain resellers that www.orlando-limo-service.com was about to expire I have an account with Pool.com, so I put in a backorder for the domain. That domain is really worth at least $750 so I did not mind the $60 fee I would be charged if I won it. Luck was on my side and today I was notified that it now belongs to me!

Congratulations! Thank you for using POOL.com. We have successfully secured the following domain(s) on your behalf: orlando-limo-service.com Your account has been charged $60.00 USD. To review the details of your domain(s) at any time, go to the Successful Backorders tab in your Pool.com account.

The Limo Project - Full Disclosure

by Jim Barbour 13. December 2010 04:58PM

I have been organizing the project documents at Google Docs and have been adding them for the world to view. This is an example of cloud computing!

So far, I am very impressed with Google Docs. I like that I can see Karen entering marketing contacts into the spreadsheet on her computer when I open the same spreadsheet from my house. It is kind of like approved spying.

Keep checking back as this repository will be growing!
